A Game Engine is software component that encapsulates mechanisms necessary for a game. For example physics calculations, rendering (2D or 3D), collision detection or scripting. Game Engines allow programmers to develop games and multimedia applications in shorter time than it would take if the developer had to develop the engine fundamentals as well. They often include proprietary Game Development Tools for managing game assets.

Game Engines typically expose their abilities via high-level APIs.
