Xu was born and raised in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, southeast China. He had higher education both in China and in the US: Bachelor of Engineering from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (Wuhan, Hubei province, China), Master of Science from University of Missouri at Rolla (Rolla, Missouri, US), both in Mechanical Engineering.
Xu lives in St. Louis, Missouri (midwest USA) with his wife, and their baby girl (her Chinese name is 悠揚, “Youyang”).
